Seeing GEMS As More than Just Loss: Progression Patterns @ Edwards Center -- Arctic building
Jul 31 @ 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Assigned Host:

Edwards Center

Presenters:

Shelly Edwards, PAC Certified Instructor

Description:

The GEMS® model recognizes the dynamic nature of the human brain and its abilities. Unlike other cognitive models, it acknowledges that everyone’s abilities can change in a moment. Modifying environments, situations, interactions, and expectations will create either supportive positive opportunities or result in distress and a sense of failure. Just as gemstones need different settings and care to show their best characteristics, so do people. Rather than focusing on a person’s loss when there is brain change, seeing individuals as precious, unique, and capable encourages a care partnership and is the core of this model. Providing supportive settings for everyone, including care providers, allows them to use what they have to be their best. The GEMS® advocate that everyone living with brain change when given the opportunity will shine.

By the completion of this workshop learners will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 number-based systems that are used to label stages/progression of dementia
  2. Discuss the value and importance of seeing people living with dementia as having retained abilities, value, and benefiting from the right support and care to optimize performance and quality of life
  3. Identify six GEMS – highlighting GEMS state characteristics 4. Compare and contrast 6 states of cognitive function and ability as GEMS 5. Use structured table to correctly identify GEMS states in shared scenarios through behaviors, abilities, and sensory processing examples

Wednesday, October 14th, 2020 (8:30 AM – 12:30 PM).

This webinar workshop is being offered during the Coronavirus Pandemic as a way to provide training while still following “social distancing” restrictions. This workshop will be hosted through Zoom. All participants must have a computer with a camera and internet access. Smart phones will not be allowed.

After this training, participants are required to attend a webinar where the OIS physical skills will be demonstrated. At this time there is only ONE scheduled for October 19, 2020 from 1pm-3pm. Once the OIS curriculum webinar has been completed, supervisors should email OIS at [email protected] at least 3 days in advance of the preferred physical skills webinar. OIS will then email a link for registration purposes. Participants must be observed watching the webinar by their immediate supervisor (or by an O.I.S. Instructor.) Watching the webinar from home without supervision will not be credited for completion.

Once a participant has successfully completed both webinars, they will receive a Level G OIS certification.

[Please Note: A proficiency in English is a requirement for this workshop.]
