Dual Diagnosis: Mental Illness and
Developmental Disability
| Co-Op Sponsor: | |
Region I Crisis Diversion Office
| Presenter(s): | |
Dr. James Clay, Psy.D
| Description: | |
Likely more than one third of individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability will also experience symptoms of a mental illness at some point in their life. Unfortunately, these symptoms often look different for people with disabilities than for those without. Symptoms often manifest as violence, self-harm and property destruction and are not adequately identified or treated. This training provides a basic understanding of how mental illness presents itself for people with developmental disabilities. Special attention is paid to such "diagnostic nightmares" as: Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder and Psychosis. Participants come away better prepared to recognize symptoms of a mental illness in the individuals they serve so appropriate & specialized treatment can be provided because research consistently indicates that early treatment for mental illness shortens the course and reduces the severity of the illness. |

| Presenter(s): | |
Lonny Webb, Behavior Consultant, Applied Behavioral
Concepts LLC
| Description: | |
| People with developmental disabilities may also have co-occurring Personality Disorders. While this issue can be contentious, caregivers who support people with personality disorders and intellectual disabilities need to understand how these disorders interact and the implications for management. For good reasons, the trend in community of caregivers has been to avoid the issue of personality disorders when considering treatment and support option tactics. This presentation will explain the reasons why clinical staff often avoid Axis II dilemmas, define prevalent disorders, and address the need for a strategy to help people attain independence. | |

| Description: | |
| Burnout is a common, often dangerous phenomenon found in the human services field. It is characterized by a state of emotional detachment, physical & psychological exhaustion & a host of psychiatric symptoms including depression & anxiety. Left unrecognized it can lead to serious problems for staff & consumers including: substance abuse & dependence, poor work performance, absenteeism, turnover &, at its worst, abuse & neglect. Fortunately, burnout can be avoided or treated, especially if detected early. This class will focus on providing attendees with a deeper understanding of what burnout is, how to prevent it & how to recognize it before it before it gets out of control. | |
