Dual Diagnosis
Co-Op Sponsor:
Inclusion Inc.
Presenter(s):
James Clay, Psy. D
Description:

It is well established that over one third of individuals diagnosed with a developmental disability will also experience symptoms of a mental illness at some point in their life. Unfortunately, these symptoms often look different for people with disabilities than for those without. Symptoms are often manifest as violence, self-harm and property destruction and are not adequately identified or treated.

This training provides attendees with a basic understanding of how mental illness presents itself in the developmentally disabled. Special attention is paid to such "diagnostic nightmares" as: Borderline Personality Disorder, Depression, Bi-Polar Disorder and Psychosis. Participants come away better prepared to recognize symptoms of a mental illness in the individuals they serve so that appropriate and specialized treatment can be provided sooner rather than later. Research consistently indicates that providing early treatment for mental illness shortens the course and reduces the severity of the illness.

How to Survive the "Triangle"
Co-Op Sponsor:
Region I Crisis Diversion Office
Presenter(s):
George Hall, LCSW
Description:

On the third Wednesday of every* month, George brings a topic and leads group discussion. Past sessions have focused on needs of foster care providers but the series is now open to a larger audience. George's advice about issues, especially on brain function, sexuality, and behavior, is renowned. Confidentiality must be respected, but it is appropriate to bring up individual issues in general terms. George has retired from other professional work, so we are especially grateful for the opportunity of his wisdom & advice. It's not required, but regular participation helps create an atmosphere of peer support.
