She has a degree in Psychology and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Organizational Communication. Kitty Thomas Office Manager / Bookkeeper
Kitty came to SDRI in 1999 with 16 years of office management and accounting that, on a good day, keeps the wind in SDRI's sails and the office sailing smoothly along. Kitty believes a disability isn't a barrier, just an obstacle, to pursuing your goals. Due to her severe hearing impairment, she's presented with many opportunities to apply that philosophy. She's active in various volunteer projects, public speaking and occasionally participates in competitive speaking. Kitty read a book about team building by Pat Riley where she read a quote that's become her philosophy, "the privilege of a lifetime is being who you are."

Andrew Tedlow *Updated*

Personal Agent

Andrew began working in the field of developmental disabilities about 10 years ago, pretty much by accident when a parent came up to him at his child care job and asked him if he'd be interested in interviewing for a one-on-one aid position serving a young man with a traumatic brain injury. Several years of working as a special education assistant, primarily with Transition-age students, followed. Andrew's last job before SDRI was at The Arc of Multnomah County, where he was the Family Services Coordinator, working with parents with cognitive deficits. He left that job in July of '04 after four years to join SDRI.
Andrew is from New Jersey originally and somehow ended up in the Pacific NW. He's married and has one dog. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, music, tennis and working in the yard.

Kris has been in the administrative industry off and on for about 10 years. Positions have ranged from dispatching to payroll, accounting and legal case investigation for the FCC, BBB, UTC and WUTC.
Though she has not directly worked with the handicapped or disabled population, she shares this about her experience through her friend's son that is 12 with Down's Syndrome: "He is one of the most caring, loveable people in the world. Let me tell you, he knows above and beyond anything I could dream about knowing let alone understanding."

Michael Gmirkin *Updated*

Full-Time Office Support

Michael considers himself to be "clasically trained," up through college coursework. His academic interests have ranged from creative writing and philosophy, to folklore and history (having completed a major in Humanities with an emphasis on Medieval Studies), to math and computer science (having completed a minor in Information Technology).
While in school, Michael held positions in web design, database design, and small office tech support. Since completing his initial educational goals, Michael has held positions in computer sales, and corporate call center software support. Hobbies include writing, working on and rebuilding computers, and occasionally attending medieval roleplaying societies (such as Amtgard or SCA) and lately a bit of post-collegiate independent abstract math studies.
Michal joined the SDRI team in June 2004, after his technical support contract ended. He currently strives to enable and improve office workflow through timely data entry and report generation, work on SDRI's web site and on the TASC group training site. He believes in individuals' rights to self-determine with minimal outside interference.

Timothy Jacobs *Updated*

Part-Time Office Support

Tim takes care of recycled paper, shredding, labeling envelopes, folding and collating materials. He doesn't let his vision impairment get in his way. Tim likes his work at SDRI as office support and says that SDRI is his favorite place. Tim enjoys hearing all the voices of people talking on the telephones as he walks around SDRI. He also likes getting paid.
At home, Tim helps with daily chores and takes walks in his neighborhood. Chances to perform with a folk group choir he belongs to are also much enjoyed. He also enjoys swimming laps at the local pool, as many as 40-60!
